HOW IT WORKS

An acid loosens the bonds holding dead cells together. Depending on the acid and the strength, that means anything from a light shed you barely notice to several days of visible peeling and a genuine reset of the surface.

Pigment-targeting peels go further, interrupting the enzyme that produces melanin so that new pigment is slower to form.

WHAT WE TREAT

Dullness, congestion and blackheads, oily and acne-prone skin, uneven tone, sun damage and melasma.

Melasma is a programme rather than a single appointment, and daily sunscreen is what makes it work. We will go through all of that before we start.

Chemical peels
WHAT HAPPENS ON THE DAY

Skin is cleansed and prepped, the acid is applied in layers while we watch the response, then neutralised. You will feel warmth and tingling, strongest in the first minute of each layer.

AFTERCARE

Light peels need sunscreen and nothing else. Medium peels need a week of simple cleanser, barrier cream and strict sun avoidance, and you must not pick the flaking skin.

GOOD TO KNOW

Depigmentation programmes are prescribed after a consultation and include home care. The in-clinic part is the smaller half of the work.

We do not peel tanned skin. If you have been in strong sun in the last fortnight, we will move your appointment.

Chemical peels — questions
Will my face actually peel?
It depends which peel. Refining and glycolic peels shed invisibly; Jessner and retinol peels flake visibly for three to seven days.
Can I have one before a holiday?
Before, no. Two weeks after you are back, yes. Peeling skin and strong sun is how you get pigmentation rather than lose it.
How often?
Light peels every four weeks, medium peels every eight to twelve. Most people do a course in autumn and maintain through winter.
Is melasma curable?
No, but it is controllable. A programme plus daily sunscreen keeps most people clear; stopping the sunscreen brings it straight back.
